What you need
- A Solana wallet with a little SOL for rent and fees.
- A name, a symbol, a logo image and a short description.
- A decision on decimals (6 or 9 are common) and total supply.
Option 1: a no-code token creator
- Connect your wallet. It pays and signs every step. Your private key never leaves the wallet.
- Fill in name, symbol, decimals, supply, logo and links.
- Approve the transaction. The mint, its metadata and your starting supply are created on-chain.
- Open the mint address in an explorer and check the supply and decimals.
- Revoke the mint and freeze authority if you want buyers to trust a fixed supply. See how to revoke mint and freeze authority.
Compare every tool, with fees and custody, on the token creators page.
Option 2: the spl-token CLI
spl-token create-token --decimals 6
spl-token create-account <MINT_ADDRESS>
spl-token mint <MINT_ADDRESS> 1000000000
This gives you a mint and a supply in your wallet but no name or logo. Name, symbol and image live in a separate metadata account (Metaplex Token Metadata, or the metadata extension on Token-2022). See how to update token metadata and logo.
For a token with a transfer fee, create it on the Token-2022 program instead (--program-2022) and read how to create a tax token.
What it costs
- Rent for the mint account: about 0.0015 SOL.
- Rent for each token account that holds the token: about 0.002 SOL.
- A small rent amount for the metadata account.
- The tool's own fee, if you use one. Fees differ a lot, so check the table on the token creators page.
Mistakes to avoid
- Keeping the mint authority when you promised a fixed supply. Anyone can see it on an explorer.
- Pointing metadata at a server you may lose. Use permanent storage for the image and JSON.
- Choosing decimals late. They cannot be changed after the mint exists.
