SPL token vs Token-2022: which to choose

Short answer

SPL token or Token-2022? What each standard is, which extensions Token-2022 adds, what each costs to create (measured), where wallets, DEXs and rug checkers treat them differently, and a simple rule for choosing.

Use a plain SPL token unless you need a feature only Token-2022 has, such as a transfer fee (tax) or interest that accrues. Both are real Solana tokens that wallets show and DEXs can trade, but Token-2022 extensions change how a token behaves, and not every pool, app or bot handles every extension. Token-2022 is slightly cheaper to create, because its name and logo live inside the mint instead of a separate Metaplex account.

The two standards in one table

SPL token (Token program)Token-2022 (Token Extensions program)

ExtensionsNoneTransfer fee, interest-bearing, metadata in the mint, default frozen, non-transferable, permanent delegate, transfer hook and more

DEX supportEvery Solana DEXMost newer pools, with limits per extension
Rug checkersRead mint and freeze authorityAlso flag risky extensions
Typical useMeme coins, community and utility tokensTax tokens, yield-style tokens, regulated or restricted tokens

Both standards share the same basics: a mint account, token accounts for each holder, decimals, supply, and mint and freeze authority. See what an SPL token is.

What Token-2022 adds

ExtensionWhat it doesWatch out for
Transfer feeWithholds a percent of every transfer, collected later by the withdraw authorityBuyers see it as a tax; some pools reject it; see how to create a tax token
Interest-bearingWallets display a balance that grows at a set rateDisplay only, no new tokens are minted
Metadata and metadata pointerStores name, symbol and logo link in the mintNone, this is why creation is cheaper
Default account stateNew token accounts start frozenHolders cannot move tokens until thawed
Non-transferableTokens cannot be sent after mintingCannot be traded
Permanent delegateOne address can move or burn anyone's tokensA serious red flag to buyers, see Token-2022 scam traps
Transfer hookRuns a custom program on every transferCan block sells; many venues refuse it

Which extensions you can pick depends on the token creator. Some offer only the transfer fee, others list a dozen; compare them in the best Token-2022 tools.

What each costs to create

We simulated the creation transactions on Solana mainnet on 3 November 2026: create the token, write its metadata, open your token account and mint the supply, at the current rent rate.

SPLToken-2022Token-2022 with transfer fee
Mint account rent0.0011 SOL0.0028 SOL (metadata inside)0.0033 SOL
Metadata account rent0.0037 SOLNoneNone
Metaplex metadata fee0.0100 SOLNoneNone
Your token account rent0.0015 SOL0.0015 SOL0.0016 SOL
Network fee (with a priority fee)0.0002 SOL0.0002 SOL0.0002 SOL
Solana costs in total0.0165 SOL0.0045 SOL0.0051 SOL

A token creator's own fee comes on top, from nothing on the CLI to 0.5 SOL at some tools, see the cheapest way to create a token. The Token-2022 mint rent grows a little with a longer name, ticker or logo link.

Where the difference shows up

  • Pools. Raydium's older AMM v4 takes SPL tokens only. Raydium CPMM and CLMM, Meteora, Orca and PumpSwap accept Token-2022, but a pool fails with NotSupportMint when the token uses an extension the program does not allow, see the Raydium Token-2022 error.
  • Rug checkers and buyers. A transfer fee, permanent delegate, default frozen state or transfer hook is flagged, so expect more questions from buyers.
  • Bots and aggregators. Trading tools have to account for the transfer fee in quotes. A token with an unusual extension may not be routed at all.
  • Fixes later. Extensions are chosen at creation and cannot be added afterwards. A transfer fee rate can be changed later only by its config authority.

How to choose

If you wantPick
A meme coin or community token that trades everywhereSPL
A tax on every transfer that you collectToken-2022 with transfer fee
A balance that visibly growsToken-2022 interest-bearing
The cheapest possible creationToken-2022 without extensions
The widest support with no surprisesSPL

Token-2022 without extensions is the one case where the newer standard has no downside for most uses: same behaviour as SPL, cheaper to create, and supported by every major wallet and newer pool.

How we checked

Costs come from simulating the SPL Token, Token-2022 and Metaplex Token Metadata instructions on Solana mainnet on 3 November 2026 at 5,080 lamports of rent per byte, using a 13-character name, a 4-character ticker and an 83-character metadata link. Extension behaviour follows the Token-2022 program's extension set; pool behaviour comes from Raydium's program error definitions, read on 24 October 2026.

Questions people ask

Is Token-2022 better than SPL?

Not in general. It adds optional extensions such as transfer fees and stores metadata in the mint. Without extensions it behaves like SPL and is a little cheaper to create.

Can I convert an SPL token to Token-2022 later?

No. The program is fixed when the token is created. Moving to Token-2022 means creating a new token and migrating holders.

Do Phantom and other wallets support Token-2022?

Yes. Phantom, Solflare and Backpack show Token-2022 tokens, including transfer-fee tokens.

Can I add a Raydium pool for a Token-2022 token?

On CPMM and CLMM, yes for supported extensions. The older AMM v4 takes SPL only, and unsupported extensions fail with NotSupportMint.

Why is an SPL token more expensive to create?

Its name and logo need a separate Metaplex metadata account, which costs about 0.0037 SOL of rent plus a 0.01 SOL Metaplex fee. Token-2022 keeps that metadata in the mint.

Which extensions scare buyers?

Permanent delegate, transfer hook, default frozen state and high transfer fees. Rug checkers flag all of them.
