How it works
A Solana address is the public half of a keypair. You cannot pick it directly, so a generator creates keypairs over and over and keeps one whose address matches your prefix or suffix. Generating locally means the private key is never sent anywhere.
How long it takes
Addresses use base58, which has 58 symbols. Each added character multiplies the work by about 58. A 3 or 4 character prefix is quick. 6 or more can take hours or far longer. Matching is case-sensitive unless the tool says otherwise. The characters 0, O, I and l never appear in base58.
Steps
- Choose a short prefix or suffix and check that every character is valid.
- Run the generator in your browser or with the Solana CLI (
solana-keygen grind). - When it finds a match, download the keypair file.
- Back it up offline before you put any funds in it.
Stay safe
- Prefer a generator that runs entirely client-side and works offline.
- Never use a keypair generated by a service that returns the private key from a server.
- Test the keypair with a tiny transfer before using it for anything large.
