Definition
Every account on Solana must hold a minimum amount of SOL, called the rent-exempt balance, to stay on-chain. The amount depends on how much data the account stores. It is a refundable deposit, not a fee.
Examples
- A standard token account locks about 0.00203928 SOL.
- A token mint account locks about 0.0015 SOL.
Why it matters
Each new token you hold creates a token account. When you sell the token, the empty account and its deposit remain. Closing empty accounts returns the SOL. See how to reclaim SOL rent from empty token accounts.
