What it means
Unknown Token
Your wallet, explorer or DEX screen found the token but could not show its name, ticker or logo. Those come from the token's metadata: an on-chain record with the name, ticker and a link to a JSON file, and that JSON file's link to the image. If any step is missing or slow, the token shows as Unknown or with a blank icon.
| Where it comes from | Wallets, explorers and DEX screens reading token metadata |
| Usually | Not an error in the token itself |
How to fix it
- Open the mint in a Solana explorer. If the name and ticker show there, the metadata exists and your wallet only needs time to refresh. Reopen the wallet after a few minutes.
- No name in the explorer either? The token was created without metadata, which happens with a bare
spl-token create-token. Add it while you hold the mint or update authority, see how to update token metadata and logo. - Name shows but no logo? Open the metadata URI in a browser. It must return JSON with an
imagefield, and that image link must load. Fix a broken link by updating the URI, which needs the update authority. - Token missing from the wallet list? Search the mint address in the wallet's token list and switch it on.
- DEX screen still blank? DEX Screener and similar sites refresh on their own schedule and can also take paid profile info, see how to update DEX Screener token info.
If that is not it
- Update authority revoked and the link is broken. The metadata can no longer change. The token keeps working, but the logo cannot be fixed.
- Wrong token. A copycat can share a name and logo. Compare the mint address, see what a mint address is.
