"custom program error: 0x0" on Solana: what it means

The fix

In the System Program, 0x0 means an account with that address already exists. In the SPL Token program, 0x0 means the account balance is below the rent-exempt threshold.

What the error means

Error processing Instruction N: custom program error: 0x0

In the System Program, 0x0 means an account with that address already exists. In the SPL Token program, 0x0 means the account balance is below the rent-exempt threshold.

Where it comes fromSystem Program or SPL Token program
Code0 (0x0)

How to fix it

  1. Find the failing program in the explorer logs.
  2. System Program: the account you are creating already exists; reuse it, or use the idempotent version of "create associated token account".
  3. SPL Token: fund the account to the rent-exempt minimum before initializing it.

If that is not it

  • In Anchor programs, errors start at 6000 (0x1770), so 0x0 is never an Anchor custom error.

Questions people ask

Why does creating a token account fail with 0x0?

The account already exists. Use the idempotent create instruction so existing accounts are skipped.

Is 0x0 a success code?

In logs it is an error code; success would not show an error at all.
