What each authority does
- Mint authority can create new tokens. While it exists, the supply is not fixed.
- Freeze authority can freeze any holder's token account so it cannot send or receive.
- Metadata update authority is separate. It can change the token's name, image and links. Revoking it is optional.
Buyers and rug checkers look at the first two, because a live mint authority lets the owner dilute holders and a live freeze authority lets the owner lock them.
Before you revoke
Revoking cannot be undone. Check that the supply is final and that every wallet you need already holds its tokens. If you plan to add or burn supply later, keep the authority until then.
Steps with a revoke tool
- Connect the wallet that holds the authority.
- Paste the mint address. The tool shows which authorities are still set.
- Choose mint, freeze or both and sign.
- Check the mint on an explorer. Both fields should read none.
Steps with the spl-token CLI
spl-token authorize <MINT_ADDRESS> mint --disable
spl-token authorize <MINT_ADDRESS> freeze --disable
Token-2022 tokens have more authorities
A Token-2022 mint can also carry a transfer fee config authority, a withdraw withheld authority and a permanent delegate. Revoking mint and freeze does not remove those. Check each one before you tell buyers the token is safe. Fees collected on a tax token are covered in how to collect Token-2022 transfer fees.
